”Trickier than bacteria”: Why severe fungal infections are on the rise
There’s a reason Earth is sometimes called the planet of fungi. These ancient organisms – billions of years old and more closely related to animals than to plants – underpin life on Earth. Yet they can also cause serious illness. This is the first instalment in Life Science Sweden’s series on fungi.
“Most people know about athlete’s foot or nail infections, and fungal infections in the genital area. But the serious ones, the infections that strike people whose immune systems are already severely compromised, are far less well known.”
So says Lena Klingspor, associate professor of clinical mycology and former senior consultant at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Karolinska Institutet She has spent more than 30 years researching fungal infections.
